There is a high probability that at least 1 person in your social circle is an addict, but porn addiction symptoms are not always easy to spot.

You need to understand that a growing percentage of the general population is getting exposed to pornographic material on a regular basis, and risks becoming addicted.

If you are worried that someone you know is addicted to porn, you need to know which symptoms to look out for.

While some of these symptoms may be obvious, there are many of them which will end up surprising you.

1. Unusual appreciation of lewd materials

This is one of the first symptoms.

If someone around you is talking about porn in a manner that is unusual it may be the start of their addiction.

Note that this doesn’t mean them talking about porn to their friends or discussing porn in general.

What we mean is them talking about and appreciating porn as if it was some other form of art they can openly talk about in front of anyone.

This is a sign that they are watching so much porn that they don’t realize they are obsessing over it.

2. General lethargy

If someone you know seems lethargic all the time it may be due to porn addiction..

One reason they are being lethargic is that they may be stimulating themselves too much while watching porn all day.

This is known to cause weakness and lethargy.

However, this isn’t the only reason addicts are so lethargic.

Sitting and watching something on a screen all day is not good for our health.

Even if you were to watch something clean for hours and hours every single day the stress of it on your eyes and your mind would make you lethargic.

3. Lack of motivation

Porn addicts aren’t just physically lethargic, they are mentally lethargic as well.

If someone who you knew to be a self-motivated person suddenly seems to not be motivated anymore they may be addicted to porn.

Addicts are only interested in what they are addicted about and everything else is secondary to them.

Doing good in school, being good at their job, going out and meeting friends, and other similar social and professional activities do not matter to them anymore.

All that matters is the porn that they are addicted to.

4. Emotional dissociation

People who are addicted to porn are also emotionally distant and disassociated.

They will seem to not care about things and will not have a reaction to anything happen.

Things that used to make them happy will not bring them happiness anymore.

Things that used to make them sad will not affect them either.

They are so burnt out on watching porn and stimulating themselves that they stop having normal emotional reactions to things.

5. Numbness to otherwise everyday stimuli

Emotions aren’t the only thing missing in porn addicts – they will seem numb overall.

They will not be excited about the things they used to be excited about.

They simply do not care about anything aside from porn.

The most important thing to note here is that they will be numb towards stimuli they used to be excited about.

The change in attitude is an indicator of addiction.

6. Forgetfulness

Since they are thinking about porn all the time they will start forgetting other things.

They will remember the names of hundreds of porn starts and will know the full details of their lives, but when it comes to things in their own life they will be forgetting things.

It may be something small – such as forgetting where they put something – or they may be forgetting things which cause problems in their lives.

7. Prevalent guilt

Porn addicts know that they have to hide their addiction from other people and they feel guilty about it all the time.

This is one of the symptoms which isn’t easy to see.

You may not even notice that they are feeling guilty until you are talking to them and they share their feelings with you.

If you think a friend is suddenly acting guilty but do not know why they may be feeling guilty they may be addicted to porn.

8. Feelings of shame

Not all addicts are the same.

While some addicts are proud of how much porn they watch many are ashamed of who they are.

Remember that being ashamed does not mean they are going to stop anytime soon.

Most people who have a shameful addiction are ashamed of themselves but that just makes them more of an addict.

They are so ashamed of their reality that they instead focus on what they are addicted to as a means of escape.

9. Social awkwardness

Porn addicts start thinking like the porn that they watch.

You will notice that they don’t seem to be as social as they were before.

They may make awkward advances towards their preferred gender.

They may say things which are sexist and think in a way that would only make sense if they were in porn.

They watch so much porn that their brain starts to think of everything in terms of how things happen in porn.

10. Regressing academic and/or professional performance

One of the most visible signs of addiction, all addiction not just porn addiction, is a regression in their professional or social life.

If someone used to be an excellent performer and if their performance keeps going down then there may be something to worry about.

If a student is slowly getting worse and worse grades in school, there may be an addiction to worry about.

11. Unusually submissive attitude

This one is also a result of the things that porn addicts watch.

Since they are addicted they get into watching the more extreme forms of pornography, many of which focus on submission.

They tend to get more submissive themselves as well.

Another reason they are submissive is because they are too mentally and physically tired to protest and just go along with whatever is suggested.

12. Tendency towards falsehoods and secrecy

Anyone who has a big secret to hide will start acting in a shady manner.

Porn addicts are trying to hide what they do every day.

It is not easy for them to hide this big secret which results in them lying about what they do and acting all secretive about their habits.

If someone seems to be keeping a big secret all the time then they may be hiding an addiction to porn or something even more serious.

13. Outbursts of frustration

While many people may feel relieved after watching porn, the same isn’t true for porn addicts.

These people are addicts and all they care about is pornography.

All the time they spend not watching porn is not a good time for them.

They may let out this frustration through sudden outbursts that make no sense to observers.

If you see someone who is over-reacting to a small problem you can be sure that they have some other problem on their mind they are frustrated about.

14. General irritability when confronted

Even if they don’t have violent or loud outbursts, they may still be irritable the whole day.

Addiction is not an easy thing to deal with.

Even if the thing they are addicted to gives them satisfaction, these people still realize that they may be doing the wrong thing.

This is why they are irritated and frustrated with themselves all the time.

Since they are in a bad mood all the time they will react badly if you try to talk to them.

They will not be the fun loving person you remembered and cherished.

15. Lack of willingness to discuss pornography

Porn addicts know that they can only hide the extent of their addiction if they do not talk about porn at all.

They know that if porn is being discussed they may say the wrong thing which may make someone suspect that they are addicted.

This is why they do not like discussing porn at all.

They will try to shut down any discussion about porn.

Note that this symptom is significant in people who used to be able to discuss porn before.

If someone disliked porn because of religious reasons or anything similar and has always had a problem discussing it then this may not be an addiction symptom for them.

16. Lack of willingness to discuss possible addiction

It isn’t just porn that they don’t want to discuss – it is addiction overall.

This is common in all types of addicts.

They know that if the people around them think about addiction they may realize that there is an addict around them.

They will not be willing to talk about any type of addiction, or may even try to justify addictions.

They may talk about how people need to leave addicts along and will talk about how addiction is just passion or something similar.

17. Dropping interest in hobbies and healthy activities

The porn addiction will be the only hobby and activity they need.

All addicts tend to stop doing the things they loved to do before.

If your friend/family member used to love playing sports they won’t anymore.

If they were addicted to video games they may not anymore.

Normally people’s activities and hobbies change with time, but if they are just dropping hobbies and activities without replacing them with other activities it may be a case of addiction.

18. Loss of interest and/or desire for spouse/significant other

This is the most bizarre part of this addiction.

Most people assume that if someone is addicted to porn it must be about sex.

Just imagine what you think a porn addict’s life will be like and one of the first assumptions that enters your head is that they do not get to have sex.

It is easy to think that someone who does not get sexual relief will be addicted to porn but reality is very different.

Often there are people who are in committed long term relationships or even married but they are still addicted to porn.

Porn addicts will give up real sex for their porn, because it is porn they are addicted to, not sex.

19. Severe depression resulting in self harm

Hiding a secret as big as porn addiction drives these people towards depression and self-harm.

They realize that they aren’t truly happy and that they can’t share the biggest part of their life to anyone.

This results in them being depressed and harming themselves.

The same is true for many different people who have to hide their true selves, not just addicts.

For example, someone who is homosexual in an environment where one cannot be openly homosexual will also get severely depressed and may indulge in self-harm.

Porn addicts go down the same route but for very different and perfectly preventable reasons.

20. Manifestations of mental disorders

Porn addicts may also begin to exhibit symptoms of other mental disorders or other disorders may start to manifest.

Mental disorders usually manifest in people who are not satisfied with their lives and who cannot find satisfaction anywhere.

This is doubly true for porn addicts so it is easy to see why they are so often mentally disturbed.

Porn addiction itself is usually not strong enough to give anyone a mental disorder, but many people have latent disorders which can be triggered.

This is how porn addiction can result in mental disorders.

Porn addiction is similar to drugs in this regard – people who already have a family history of mental illness are at risk of triggering mental disorders with drug use.

Porn addicts have to be just as wary as they are.

Porn addiction is hard to diagnose and detect until it becomes very obvious.

If you have a friend or a family member that is exhibiting the symptoms discussed in this list you may need to intervene.

Just make sure that there are legitimate chances of them being an addict.

You can try talking to them, seeing what they do all day, or by talking to their friends.

Do not attempt to violate their privacy to find hints of their addiction – if they find out, they may cut ties with you and it will be even more difficult for you to help them then.
